The Nahant Police Department has a Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer better known as S.M.A.R.T.

Drivers approaching the S.M.A.R.T unit will see the posted speed limit as well as their automobile’s speed detected by radar within the unit. The S.M.A.R.T. unit will also record other important information as it monitors traffic including the total number of vehicles and their average speed.

The Department will be placing the S.M.A.R.T unit at various locations throughout the Town at frequent speeding and previous accident locations. The Department will also consider location requests from Nahant residents in an effort to promote safe driving throughout the neighborhoods in Town.

Use of the S.M.A.R.T unit greatly aids in educating the public, as many drivers are unaware of exactly how fast they are actually going or do know know the local speed limits. Chief Furlong is optimistic that the use of the new S.M.A.R.T unit will complement ongoing efforts to reduce speeding through awareness and education.

Residents who would like to make a request that the S.M.A.R.T unit be placed in their neighborhoods should contact the Department during regular business or send an e-mail to tfurlong@nahantpolice.org.
